We use only the very best Wild Salmon from the pristine Alaskan waters of Kodiak Island!
Kodiak Wild Gourmet Seafood For thousands of years people have been enjoying fresh seafood from the icy waters of the North Pacific. Native Alaskans subsisted on this delicacy and much of their lives revolved around the harvest and preservation of this food source. In later years, clipper ships from as far south as Astoria and San Francisco made the long voyage to the plentiful Alaskan fishing grounds. By 1882, Kodiak Island had its first salmon cannery and since that time the harvest and processing of seafood has become the backbone of Kodiak Island’s economy. Proper maintenance of Alaska’s fish stocks is the first step to a thriving commercial fishing industry. Alaska’s fisheries management system is well crafted and has maintained sustainable harvests since it’s statehood over four decades ago. But continued success involves much more than just the ability to obtain high quality fish. Recently, Kodiak’s number one industry has been hard hit by low canned salmon prices, slow-moving inventory and overwhelming competition from foreign fish farms. Commercial fishing is a physically demanding and dangerous profession which currently reaps prices that are only 20 per cent of what they were a few years ago. Chef Joel Chenet understands the difficulties facing Kodiak’s commercial fishing fleet and has decided to do something about it. After months of hard work and preparation, he developed a delicious product line that delivers Kodiak’s freshest fish right to the consumer. Chef Chenet buys his fish directly from the fishermen and transforms it into mouth-watering frozen dinners. "I wanted to create quick & easy meals that impart the natural goodness of Kodiak’s seafood", says Chenet. His creations are indeed simple to prepare but their taste is what one would expect from a four-star chef. There are four different meals currently being offered including; Salmon Kiev with King Crab Veloute, Salmon Igloo with Pacific Shrimp Sauce, Cedar Planked Salmon with King Crab Butter and the Kodiak Sea Burger with Vegetable Brioche bun. Plans to expand the product line have already begun. The benefits of a diet rich in seafood have long been known. Wild Alaskan salmon is an excellent source of high quality protein and contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. Cold water fish such as salmon also contain the beneficial Omega-3 oils which research shows to decrease the risk for heart disease, inflammatory processes and certain cancers. Health experts agree that eating seafood twice a week is an integral part of an overall healthy diet. Kodiak Wild Gourmet Seafood dinners may not single-handedly alter the economy of Kodiak Island, but very well may change the way a busy homemaker prepares a healthy and delicious dinner. And if the response from the locals is any indication, this is definitely a product for today’s fast paced, health conscious lifestyle. © 2003 Kerry Felton
